At Herrankukkaro, responsibility is the basis of all our operations. Our business model is founded on respect for nature, people and cultural heritage. We develop only within the limits set by the surrounding archipelago.

Nature guides our choices. Buildings are carefully placed in the landscape, existing structures are preserved and new construction combines traditional methods with sustainable solutions. We aim to protect biodiversity and maintain the natural balance of the archipelago.

Sustainability is present in our daily operations. We focus on energy efficiency, water use and waste management. Materials are chosen for durability and low environmental impact, and maintenance extends the lifecycle of buildings and equipment.

Food plays an essential role in our responsibility work. Our dining is based on organic and seasonal ingredients, with a strong focus on local producers and archipelago fish. We actively reduce food waste.



People are at the centre of Herrankukkaro. We value our staff, partners and guests and work to ensure a fair, safe and meaningful environment. Cooperation with local entrepreneurs strengthens the regional economy and preserves local skills.

Our processes are transparent and continuously improved through feedback and learning. Responsibility evolves as knowledge and expectations change.

Cultural sustainability is at our core. By preserving traditional Finnish smoke sauna culture and archipelago heritage, we protect values that cannot be replaced. Our goal is to offer meaningful experiences rather than mass tourism.

Our mission since nearly three decades


  • We use renewable energy, wood and wind power
  • Our buildings are made of wood – renewable and natural material
  • We avoid plastic as much as possible
  • We contribute to stop the climate change by offering sustainable food: organic delicaces and wild food from our forest, from the sea and from the fields in our neighbourhood
  • We prefer fish in our kitchen, as using certain local fishes also helps to approve the water quality of the Baltic Sea
  • The fish is prepared in our own premises, with cold smoke, warm smoke, embers and flames of open fires
  • The nature is a gift for all of us, and we have to take care of the nature. We understand the synergy between us and the nature around us being our great opportunity – and our great love.

Across the borders

Our company does not only care for the environment, we also put efforts in the social responsibility. Already over 20 years ago, our small family run business was able to create a social project, Lotus Hill in Sri Lanka. There we have built an education centre for disabled students, a house for homeless children, schools, health centres, homes, sanitary facilities, wells, water tanks and water cleaning plants. We have supported poor children by providing shoes to enable them to visit school, by organizing daily meals in the school and by collecting funds for education.

Key to environmentally responsible traveling

Herrankukkaro, that has recieved Green Key -certificate, works daily resource-efficiently to reduce water and energy consumptions. We also focus on reducing waste, recycling, offering organic and vegetarian food, using ecologic cleaning detergents and paper towels and making traveling in nature possible.

For clean nourishment


Most of the food we offer comes from the nature and wilderness. Rymättylä is the most renowned fishing rural municipality of Finland. We fish some of the prey ourself. We prepare all the fish at the location by warm- and cold smoking, flaming on open fire, broiling and so on. -It is the best from the net through oven onto the dining table.

Social responsibilities


We have arranged financial support in co-operation with Positiivarit to for example help infection patients in children’s hospitals. Since 1995 we have worked in Lotus Hill ry – support project that we incorporated. It takes place in Sri Lanka to better the lives of local deprived and disabled people.

 

We have built homes, lavatories, roofs, waterchambers, wells and a health-care center. We have equiped children’s homes and reception centers and centers for the disabled. In addition, we have built the first education center of the island for disabled children.

 

We have supplied school supplies, school uniforms, hygiene products and made attending school possible for thousands of poor children. We have also hired medical doctors and teachers in the area.
