GET A GRIP!

Learn with a funny and quick method how to tie five basic knots. This skill will be useful for you many times later on.
Reef knot, bowline, sheet bend, clove hitch and palomar knot are not at all difficult to tie. With these knots you can tie packages and connect ends of snares without quagmires that are impossible to open. The knots will be tied to manila rope and you will have the readymade knots as a souvenir with you. You can use them later to refresh your memory or to decorate your summer home.

CROFTER’S YARD GAMES

Compete with and against your fellow team mates at the traditional yard games! Variety of small events such as throwing matches, fighting on a beam, slingshot, rope pulling, board skiing, pole sledge, kick sledge relay will amuse for the entire hour, or two! With these one can find again the child’s joy in oneself!

Herrankukkaro´s specialities

FISHING COMPETITION ON THE SHORE PIER

When was the last time you sat fishing? Participants are given genuine, old-fashioned hooks and lines and worms. The competition takes 30 to 45 minutes. A peaceful atmosphere, but exiting competition. In winter on the ice with jigs.

SECRETS OF NETS UNDER ICE

This activity is a welcome break during a day filled with meetings. A fisherman guides you to the secrets of traditional fishing under ice. The group makes together the openings into the ice for the nets, puts the nets down and draws them with traditional equipment. The nets can also be checked and lifted up the following day. All these are done during the daylight.

PUSHING THE WOMEN

This is a cheerful winter competition for pairs on the ice with sledges. Coffee made at the open fire to finish with.

SUMMER NIGHT’S ROWING TRIP

Rowing together gives a change to enjoy the beautiful archipelagic scenery and the sharing experience – peaceful moment in cosy atmosphere. After the trip, on the pier, you get a warm drink made at the open fire.

EVENING OUTDOORS IN THE ARCHIPELAGIC STYLE

A darkening night in the archipelago is witnessed by rowing with small traditional boats to the shore of the island Nimetön (Unnamed), just by a high rock, where we prepare food and coffee at the camp fire by a lean-to. After eating in peace we return to Herrankukkaro without hurry and then enjoy the smoke sauna’s gentle steam.

SEINE DRAWER’S’ OLYMPICS

This is especially for groups wishing to experience the genuine winter atmosphere of their childhood, while competing at games like net drawing, kick sledge slalom, pole sledge relay, ice golf, ice ball or ice bowling.

TRIPS TO THE ARCHIPELAGO

TRIP TO THE HIDE OUT CAVE OF THE BOOTLEGGER KING

This is a hiking trip to a close-by island where you’ll climb the uneven paths with the aid of ropes all the way to the cave once resided by smugglers where you can have a sip to taste their product.

NORDIC WALKING TRIP IN THE ARCHIPELAGO

First you warm up and stretch and then you get personal coaching to the Nordic walking technique, then you take a guided walking tour and finally stretch after the effort. The price includes a thorough coaching by an expert.

TO THE SEA

BOOTLEGGER’S TRIP

You are taken to a sea trip on small traditional rowing boats along the old smugglers’ routes. A local fisherman will tell you interesting stories about the surrounding archipelago and the history of bootlegging. After rowing the group will climb the uneven paths with the aid of ropes all the way to the cave once resided by smugglers where you can have a sip to taste their product.

CRUISE TO THE ISLE OF LOISTOKARI

The rock of Loistokari in the middle of the open sea Airisto is an interesting place to visit. This isle was once inhabited by the family of the light guard. A story tells that the mother tied the children with a rope to the corners of the cottage in order to prevent them falling into the sea. On the isle there are some group tasks to do, such as lighting an open fire, tossing a horse shoe, kicking a ball tied with a rubber band and slingshot. Also coffee is made and sausages grilled at the open fire.

You can choose from four different ships; a steamship s/s Ukkopekka for 150 persons, trawler m/s Airisto for 58 persons, motor vessel m/s Laura for 30 persons and motor vessel m/s Noora for 20 persons.

FISHING

JIGGING FOR BURBOTS

At dusk, in the light of lanterns, you visit the location of burbots. The fisherman guides you to fish with jig and enjoy the atmosphere. At bad weather a lean-to is put up to shelter the group. This is an experience especially for foreigners – in the shadows and lights of lanterns you trap big fish that look a bit frightening.

LANTERN TRAIL COMPETITION

On the yard of Herrankukkaro at dusk the groups do orienteering along the trails lit by lanterns. At the task points they answer tricky questions and maybe taste a sample of something to identify… It can be carried out with the Christmas theme, too.
